The Crafts' Council Maker of the Week

Delighted to be chosen for this. The Crafts Council asked me why I like making tiles….

“I specialise in tile-making because I enjoy seeing how surface patterns, colours and shapes fit together and play off each other.

I trained in Italy where I adored the geometric patterns and rich colours. Back in England, I use the maiolica technique with spontaneous brushwork on a tin-glaze to create layers of interest, like watercolour painting. I mix my own glazes and am intrigued by the variations and possibilities. Fired glazes often behave differently to what I’m expecting and I don’t always see what I’m looking at!”

Still looking at Green....

The wonderful freshness of dark botanical green with white is timeless...   other colours can then be introduced.     I found a glazed dark green, made from Cobalt and Chrome oxides, which is like diving into a glorious deep pool of water.
